Post-Ride Thoughts

It is now March 2008, 8 months or so since I rode to Paris, and thought it would be good if I wrote on here what has gone through my mind since that epic journey (for me it was epic!)....

I must admit that since coming home, I didn't go on the bike for any notable distance for a good while and in early August, bought a Ribble race bike... unfortunately 25" frame is a bit big for me (the wonders of ebay) so its still sitting in my garage waiting for me to get my bum in gear to sell it on.

So a couple of weeks later found a bargain, a 12 yr old Raleigh Dyna-Tech 500.. (sounds good god knows how GOOD it really is!) but it was at least the right size frame that i could sit on without stretching.

I hadn't been on a racer since my early teens so thats about 20 years so I was getting back into the different riding position, different handlebars, gear shift, and the bumpy ride on them unforgiving narrow tyres.

After a couple of times out to get a feel for the bike and putting SPD's on it, what a difference it made to my riding!  I should have bought this 12 months previous and ridden that to Paris, half the effort needed to cover the same distance and not so achy legs!

Typical.

Nowadays I try to go out at least twice if not three times a week for an hour a night just to keep up the fitness and get out in the fresh air.  However since this winter hasn't been the mildest or driest its been difficult to go out in the pouring rain or -5 temperatures (early evening too) but I tend not to go out before 8pm since the roads are too busy for me.  I have been known to go out at midnight and come back around 1-130am! no one about, except drunks but they are easy to spot and avoid, but its a bit of a gamble cycling through Chorley on student night :).

As the weather becomes kinder and the evenings are becoming lighter it will be easier to go out and do some longer rides but with two young children this isn't fair on my wife.

We shall see.

till next time :)
